Capital of Alaska
The Capital of Alaska was moved from Sitka to Juneau. -
Yukon railroad completed
The Yukon White Pass Railroad was completed. This made long distance travel for Alaskans possible. -
First warming shelter built
The first warming shelter was built at Ketchikan, Alaska. It was built to help house the homeless and people without heat. -
Organic Act
Alaska was renamed a territory after the Second Organic Act of 1912. -
Railroad expands communities
When the U.S. Government built the Alaska Railroad between 1915 and 1923, it encouraged the creation of communities along its route. -
Measles serum
French researchers Charles Nicolle, MD, and Ernest Conseil, MD, showed that measles patients have specific protective antibodies in their blood. The researchers then demonstrated that serum made from the blood of measles patients could be used to protect against the disease. -
influenza
While influenza was raging in Alaska, a veterinarian by the name of J.S. Koen noted similarities between influenza symptoms in the pigs he was treating and the symptoms of the Spanish Flu epidemic in humans. -
