    The First Special Education Institution (April 15, 1817)
    Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was the first educational institution for the deaf in North America. He opened this school on April 15, 1817, it was called “ Connecticut Asylum the education of the Deaf and Dumb persons” this school provides math, reading, writing, geography, history, and the Bible. The institution is now the American School for the Deaf.

     Penshurst State School & Hospital
    The Penshurst state school and hospital George Lovatt was the architect of this school and hospital, this hospital is an institution for the feeble-minded, disabled, and epileptic, and this hospital had over five hundred patients and 10,500 souls were dispatched and there were so many children in that hospital that were disabled and grow to old age and with no choice of leaving the institution.

The Arc is one of the schools that don't think that it's only a disability that only defines them but they see it as all people with developmental and intellectual disabilities by seeing their strengths, abilities, and inherent value.
