The Evolution of Media in the Classroom

  • Typewriter

    Typewriter
o Typewriters were used in schools beginning in the 1920s through the late 1900s. At Botetourt High School in 1948, students use typewriters in their Commercial Arts class.
o This photograph serves as an example of how students used typewriters in schools to get their work done. The use of “each with their own typewriter and desk” indicates how they were used in a classroom setting.
  • Projector

    Projector
o At a local village school in upper Austria, volunteer film operator Herr Fichtl has his projector packed to present a film to students. Schools and social centers in the area at the time were able to watch short, entertaining movies.
o This photograph serves as an example of how students could watch videos and film using a projector. The use of “rural schools” indicates how it was used in a classroom setting.
  • Computer

    Computer
o On May 23, 1966, The Financial Times in London, England published a magazine with a section titled “New Mobile Computer Classroom.” In this section, the author, Prof. J.F. Coales, explains the implementing of the Elliott 903 Computer.
o The use of “will be coming into use for schools” and “believed to be the first in the world” indicate some of the early, if not first, uses of personal computers in classrooms.
  • LeapPad Tablet

    LeapPad Tablet
o In 1999, the first LeapPad was released. The LeapPad is an interactive tablet for young children to use to help further their education. In spring of 2001, the Sunday Times in London, England published this magazine that features a section about the LeapPad tablet.
o The use of “now brings its interactive educational experience” specifically indicates how these children have used it in an educational setting, whether that is at home or in the classroom.
  • Smartboard

    Smartboard
o In 1991, Smart Technologies invented the Smartboard. In April of 2001, The Department of Commerce Patent and Trademark Office issued the Trademark Official Gazette for scientific systems and educational software, including the Smartboard starting on page 5.
o This document serves as an example of the science behind the interactive whiteboard. The use of “transmission and processing of voice, video, and text information” indicates how exactly the Smartboard can be used in a classroom setting.
