The Dividing Nation
All of these events in one way or an other lead to the civil war by turning people against each other over basically one main topic. This topic was on save trade which was very valuable to the Southerners who were opposed to by the Northers who disagreed with slavery. -
The Missouri Compromise
This was and agreement made between congress in 1820. It stated that Missouri would be admitted to the Union as a slave sate and hat Maine would be admitted as a free state. congress also drew an imaginary line at 36°, 30 North. -
Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 was created by Henry Clay it began by admitting California as a free state which pleased the North. But it let The New Mexico and Utah territories decided whether or not they wanted to be a free state of a slave state. This Compromise also ended slave trade in Washington D.C. And later this compromise called for a strong fugitive slave act. This Event lead to the war because this compromise destroyed the Missouri compromise which made the Northers very angry. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
An act proposed by Stephen A. Douglas which outraged the Northerners because it abolished the the Missouri compromise. It also stated that the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska could decided whether or no they wanted to have slavery in their states. This small act lead up to the Civil war because it started to turn the Northerners against the Southerners on the topic of slavery. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom after he had lived in a free state, When His master moved there. Chief Justice Taney ruled that since Dred Scott was not a Citizen he could not sue for his freedom and he also stated that Dred Scott could never be a Citizen of the USA. This Outraged to Northerners once again and made them even more opposed to the south and tempers between the North and the South were Growing thin. -
Election of 1860
the presidential race o 1860 showed how divided the United states was over the topic of slavery. On the day Lincoln was elected the Southerners realized that the no longer had the power to shape the way government would make its decisions and they feared that congress would make a move to abolish slavery. In this urn of events the South decided to leave the Union. This act because President Lincoln said that the secession of the South was unconstitutional and wrong. -
Attack on Fort Sumter
This was the day the South attacked Fort Sumter and yet while the South was shelling the fort no one died or was injured. Now the country was truly divided over the topic of slavery and the war was just about to begin between the North and the South.
