First issue of the Liberator
The Liberator was the first anti-slavery newspaper. It helped slaves feel more powerful and helped open the eyes to many Americans who didn't care about slavery. -
Compromise of 1850
Proposed by Henry Clay, it made California a free state. Slavery is illegal in Washington d.c. Passed a Fugitive Slave Act which meant that you could not help a fugitive. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin published
A book that was published that was all about the cruel life of how slaves lived. -
Kansa-Nebraska Act
Meant to settle slavery in the territories. Organized the region of Kansas and Nebraska. They were both in the north, but on the latitude line. Before the law, the votes would have unequal in Senate, making the South mad. -
James Buchanan sworn into office as the 15th president
James Buchanan was nominated president of the Democratic party in Pennsylvania. Tried to appeal white Southerners. Endorsed popular sovereignty. He eventually was elected for president. All of the Southern states except for Maryland voted for him. He finished with 174 votes -
Dred Scott decision
Dred Scott was an African American slave, that was moved from free to slave states a few times. He took this to court to become free. The court decided that even though he was on free soil, he was property, so he had no right a lawsuit. This caused a major outrage in many Americans. -
John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry
John Brown led a group to Harpers Ferry to attack. The goal was to revolt against the slave owners, John Brown was sentenced to death. John Brown was an abolitionist, which meant other abolitionists would take his stop and continue the uprise. -
Abe Lincoln elected president
Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth president of the United states. Once he was barely even elected, he was already dealing with major complaints and problem from the army. Lincoln was a wise and intelligent man and made many great decisions in office. He was a Democrat. -
South Carolina secedes from the Union
Just after Abraham Lincoln was elected president, South Carolina seceded from the Union. They were the first of many states to secede to the Confederacy. -
The Battle at Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was a part of the Union. Just as Lincoln became president, Sumter contacted him saying that they were low on supplies and the Confederacy was demanding that they surrender. The Confederacy attacked and the Union surrendered giving up the fort. -
The Battle of Bull Run
It was the first major battle of the Civil War. The Confederates won the battle. The war was back and forth for a while, but then the Confederates pulled it off and won the first battle. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation said that, during the third year of the Civil War, all slaves shall be free. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
The Union won this battle. It was one of the biggest battles that either side had ever fought in. It was known as one of the bloodiest battles that were fought. This won also stopped the Confederates from attempting a second invasion. -
Sherman's march to the sea
General William Tecumseh Sherman led a huge march to the 'sea' to capture port city of Savannah. He led about 60,000 soldiers on a 285 miles walk. The Yankees tried to fight back but it didn't work, the port was captured. -
The Surrender at Appomattox Court House
One of the last battle of the Civil War. The Confederates were surrounded once again by the Union. Later that day, the Confederate surrendered to the Union at the Court House and that was one of the battles that led to the end of the Civil War. -
Lincoln's assassination
Lincoln was attending a play at Ford's Theatre. John Booth had snuck up behind Lincoln and shot him in the back of the head. Killing Abraham Lincoln.
