    The Battle of Fort Blair is known as or sometimes called "Fort Baxter Masacre." It was a minor battle in the Civil War. It took place at Baxter Springs, Kansas. In late 1863, Quantrill's Raiders, a large Confederate guerrilla band, was traveling south through Kansas along the Texas Road to winter in Texas. Numbering about 300, this group captured and killed two Union teamsters who had come from a small Federal Army post called Fort Blair.

    This battle was fought in Athens, Alabama. The Union Army was a company under Captain Emil Adams. At 4:00 a.m 600 Confederate Calvry men attacked Athens and there were only 100 Unions. Even though the Union Army was outnumbered they managed to repulse and get the Confederates to retreat after a two hour battle. It was a Union Victory.

Seeing the strength of the Union's entrenched line retreated behind Opequon Creek the next morning. The battle was inconclusive.
