    Nation's wealth was in the hands of the church.The head of Catholic church was the Pope in Rome.The archbishops of Canterbury and York were heads in the church in England.They were chosen by the king.During this period there was a struggle between the crown and the church,which led to the murder of Thomas Beckett;who was the archbishop of Canterbury.He was buried in the cathedral,which represented the power of church over the community.There were two styles: Romanesque style and Gothic style.

    Norman churches were built in romanesque style during the 11th and 12th centuries.They were characterised by massive walls,heavy pillars and round arches.There was a nave and two aisles,also there were stone vaults,which were supported by stone pillars.There weren't a lot of decorations.

    The most important cathedrals were built in Gothic style.They were characterised by arches,vaults and buttresses.Gothic architecture is light,spacious and graceful.We can divided Gothic architecture in three phases:at first in the 13th century churches were simple.Then in the 14th century architecture became more elaborate and decorated.Windows became wider.The last phase was characterised by the predominance of vertical lines and outside the churches there were statues.

    The Anglican church was dominant when England was ruled by Elizabeth I,who was the second daughter of Henry VIII.It was a middle way between Catholicism and Protestantism.It used the English language and used services and prayer books from Catholicism.Also some rituals and practices.But then there was a religious conflict between Anglicans,who followed the church of England;Catholics,who followed the Roman church and Puritans,who were a group of protestants.Toleration act settled the conflicts.
