  • The Reformation Ends (began 1517)

    People started to challenge the accepted views and ideas. Hierarchy began to fail and monks fought about strict worship. This event highlighted the differences between religion and science.
    Major figures involved include Thomas Mare and Martin Luther as well as the catholic church, the clergy and protestants. This event was important for many European cultures as it addressed some issues about power and corruption within the Catholic Church.

    The Enlightenment

    During this time there were many philosophical, cultural and social movements that changed the structures of society. There was a realisation and sense of self-awareness towards religion. Some influential figures during this time period wer Johann Bach, Cesare Beccoria, Francis Bacon, John Comenius. It mostly occured in majot nations such as England, Germany and France. As a result of this, many historical events occured such as the French Revolution. Changed views about freedom of thought.

  • Colonisation of Australia

    -A Penal Colony established to relieve overcrowding in British prisons.
    -1500 people landded and Sydney cove and reduced the indigenous popuilation by 90% between 1788-1900
    - British settlers, Natives, and Cpt Arthur Philip were involved
    -Dramatic decrease in indigenous population due to: disease; settlers acquiring land; direct and violent conflict.
    - This spread other religions to Australia which, in turn, disrupted aboriginal religions
    - Christianity came with Irish settlers

    Contemporary problems of rising issues such as rationalism, liberalism, materialism and the inspiration of scripture were discussed. Pope Pius IX, the cardinals and 700 Bishops were involved It affected the amount of power that the pope had. Took place in Rome and gave the pope full and supreme power over the church and the idea of papal infallability was created.
