Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Columbus left Spain abord the Maria, with the Pinta and the Nina along side. He sailed across the Atlantic ocean and came accross what he thouht was Asia which was actualy the Bahomas just south of modern day Florida, USA. He retuned to what he thought was Asia several times before he died. -

On his famouse 1492 voyage, Columbus promised a reward of golld to whoever saw land first. A sailor named Rodrigo de Triana was the first to see land on October 12, 1492: a small island in the present day Bahamas. Columbus named this island san salvador. -

Vasco da Gamma sailed from Lisbon, Portugal. He rounded the cape of good hope and anchored at Malindi on the east coast of Africa. -

Vasco da Gama's Trade
In May of 1498, Vasco da Gama arrived off the port of Calicut. There he took on cargo of spices. After returning to Portugal, da Gama made a profit of several thousand percent. This soon became a common trade route. -

Portugal took lead in European explration. In 1520, portugese fleets began probing south-ward. They discovered a new ssorce for gold that became known to Europeans as the Gold Coast. -
Columbus dies
Christopher Columbus Died on May 20, 1506 at the age of 54. He died in Valladolid, Crown of Castile, in modern Day Spain. Christopher Columbus died still believing that his discovery of America was only a route to Asia.
