Empresario Hayden Edwards declared his town of Nacogdoches independent of Mexico. Angry about this event taking place, Mexico asked Stephen F. Austin to stop the rebellion. Austin, along with a militia, ended the rebellion, but this only caused distrust to begin between Texans and the Mexican government -
Mier y Teran Report
Feeling like the United States may be attempting to take annex Texas, the Mexican government sent General Mier y Teran to investigate issues in Texas. Mier y Teran discovered that Anglos outnumbered Mexicans 10 to 1. To solve this inbalance in the population, Mier y Teran recommended that Mexico build more garrisons (forts) and increase Mexican settlers in Texas and decrease the number of Anglo settlers.
