Beginning of Age of Exploration
The Europeans wanted God, glory and gold in the New World. Columbus did not actually want to find new land; he was looking for a sea passage to Asia. Most of the explorers were from Spain, Portugal and France. A conquistador is a Spanish term for conqueror. Cortes tore down Tenochtitlan and built New Spain. -

Cabeza de Vaca
Cabeza de Vaca was captured by the Karankawas. Most of the Natives who were dying at the time were dying of disease. When he finally arrived in Mexico, the people thought that Cibola was in Texas after hearing his stories. -

Coronado sets out for Cibola
Cibola is seven mythical cities made of gold. Coronado thought Cibola was in Texas because Cabeza de Vaca told stories of Cibola being in Texas. They did not ever find Cibola. They did however, find the Grand Canyon. -
La Salle Lands in Texas
France started challenging Spain for Texas, and La Salle was on of the French explorers. La Salle discovered the Mississippi River. -
Fort St. Louis Discovered
Fort St. Louis is in Texas near present day Aresona Creek, which was founded by La Salle. Unfortunately, the French failed at growing crops and there were too many Native attacks. La Salle died from muteny. -
Phillip Nolan Expedition
A filibuster is someone who wanted Texas to not be a part of Mexico. Two examples of filibusters are Jean LaFitte and James Bean. Jean LaFitte was a flilbuster pirate who stole goods and vaues from Mexican ships. -
Mission San Francisco Founded
The purpose of the mission was to convert Texans. The friars led the missions. Spain is responsible for building missions. It was associated with Catholicism. Most missions comepletely failed, mainly due to diseases and Indian attacks. The buildings that protected the missions were called presidios. -
Marques de Rubi Inspects Texas
De Rubi's mission was to go to Texas and tell Spain how to missions were going. The Spanish king sent him on the mission and his recommendations included only taking control of San Antonio and to exterminate the Lipan Apache Indians -

A filibuster is someone who desired independence for Texas and for it not to be part of Spain. Two other filibusters are Jean Lafitte and Phillip Bean. Jean Lafitte was a pirate who attacked Spanish ships and stole other peoples' values. -

The Louisiana Purchase meant US-Spain relations were destroyed. The 3 countries that still claimed land in North America were Great Britian, Spain and Mexico. -

Pineda followed to Florida coast, passed Mississippi and Alabama and the Texas Coast. He found out their was no sea passage to Asia.
