1954: Brown v. Board of Education
The U.S. supreme court shut down segregated schools. The case was named after Oliver Brown who's daughter was not allowed to attend the all white school in their Topeka,Kansas neighborhood. In 1951 the N.A.A.C.P filed a lawsuit for Oliver and others. four other people were also trialed that same day and all of the cases were named Brown v.s. the board of education.At the end of the cases chief justice earl warn announced the courts anonymous decision that it was unconstitutional. -
1955: The Montgomery Bus Boycott
A woman named Rosa Parks was arrested because she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus. She was put in jail for four days. This is important to the civil rights movement because it put a stop to segregation on public buses. -
1957: Martin Luther King Jr. elected as president of Southern Christian Leadership Conference .
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was created just after the Montgomery Bus Boycott had ended and Martin Luther King Jr. was elected as president of Southern Christian Leadership Conference. This is important to the civil rights movements because its purpose was to get civil and political rights and Martin Luther King Jr was also trying to get both of those. -
1958: The year of sit-ins
Students from across the country came together to participate in the sit ins. The sit ins happened because people were ready to take action in order to secure equal rights for themselves. This important to the civil rights movement because this showed that people could change policies in the 1950's and 60's. -
1960: Television as a catalyst for change.
By 1960, ninety percent of American homes had a television. This was the way to figure out what was going on around the world. The reason this is important to the civil rights movement is because they were playing on T.V. what was happening during the civil rights movement so other people around the world could know what was going on. -
1961: Interstate Commerce Commission
the Interstate Commerce Commission issued a desegregation order. This enabled passengers to sit wherever they chose on buses, ‘white’ and ‘colored’ signs came down in the terminals; separated drinking fountains, toilets, and restaurants and cafes in bus stations began serving people regardless of skin color. This is important because it was another huge step to geting equal rights. -
