    Theodore Roosevelt was born in Manhattan, New York City to a pretty wealthy family. He was home-schooled, then he attended Harvard University, graduating in 1880. After he got out of college he served in the New York state legislature from 1881 to 1884.

    On October 1, 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, home of such beautiful views, wildlife, and trees. Some natural wonders nature has created there were the Half Dome and the giant sequoia trees. Congress set aside close to 2,000square miles of land for the third national park ~ Yosemite.

    When the assassination of President William McKinley happened, Theodore Roosevelt, not yet 43, became the 26th president. Also known as the youngest president.

    Energy crisis
    The Energy Crisis started with the Coal Strike of 1902. The Coal Strike of 1902 was a strike by United Mine Workers of America, in Eastern Pennsylvania trying to get higher wages, shorter workdays, and recognition for their hard work. Roosevelt set up a meeting that marked the turn of the U.S. Government from strikebreaker to peacemaker in industrial disputes. The energy crisis played a key role in the economic downturn of the 1970s. With the OPEC oil embargo of 1973, oil prices jumped 350%.

    The Elkins Act was passed on February 9th, 1903. This act gave federal courts the power to end rate discrimination. Another reason this act was important is that it supported large railroad companies and upheld the rates of interstate commerce.

    Pelican Island, Florida named first national wildlife refuge
    Disturbed by the killing of so many of Florida's birds, Roosevelt signed in an executive order in 1903 making Pelican Island a federal bird reservation. This was the first national wildlife refuge.

    The United States presidential election of 1904 was held on November 8, 1904. The Republican Party unanimously nominated Theodore Roosevelt for president at their national convention. Roosevelt called on the voters to support his "square deal" policies. No earlier president had won by so large of a margin with a 56.4% popular vote.

    The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 prohibited the sale of misbranded or adulterated food and drugs in interstate commerce. On the 30th of June 1906, President Roosevelt signed the Food and Drugs Act, known simply as the Wiley Act, a crucial part of the Progressive era.

    Devil’s Tower, Wyoming, named first national monument
    Due to the big influence it had on the country, Theodore Roosevelt deemed Devil's Tower the first national monument. Devil's tower is important because it is a sacred spiritual site for over 20 Indian tribes. For a very long time, these grounds were used for religious and cultural rituals for many people.

    On March third, 1909, Roosevelt and his expeditionary party leave New York for Africa. On April twenty-first, 1909, the expedition arrives in Mombasa. From there, Roosevelt and his party travel through British East Africa, the Belgian Congo, and Sudan. Roosevelt and his expeditionary party come back to the United States on June eighteenth, 1910.

    Runs for presidency, unsuccessfully for Bull-Moose Party
    The Progressive platform, known as the Bull-Moose Party, called for the direct election of U.S. senators, woman suffrage, reduction of the tariff, and many social reforms. Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey defeated Republican President William Howard Taft and former president and Progressive Party nominee Theodore Roosevelt.
