    Creation of the Bureau of the Handicapped
    This committee was created to fund research and training in special education. This shows that the government saw the need for change in special education and was willing to support efforts to improve (and create) the systems that assist and protect people with disabilities. (It is now the Office of Special Education Programs)

  • Willowbrook State School

    Willowbrook State School
    Geraldo Rivera showed the public how people with disabilities were being treated in this institution. The horrific images seen by the public caused people to want to create acts (like others in the timeline) to help people with disabilities be treated fairly and equally.

  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia
    The court ruled that children with disabilities had the same right to a free public education as everyone else. This case built off the landmark case of Brown v. Board, showing that by not providing an equal education to students with disabilities there was segregation occuring.

  • Rehabilitation Act Amendments-Section 504

    Rehabilitation Act Amendments-Section 504
    Section 504 "prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities". It made sure that people with disabilities have access to progams that are funded by the government, including public schooling.

  • The Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This act outlined what was required of schools when they were providing an education to students with disabilities. They must provide special education, supplemental services, free appropriate public education, due process, a least restrictive environment, and must not reject students based on their disability.

  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    This act "prohibits discrimination in the areas of recruitment, hiring, advancement, and termination of individuals with disabilities" (Wood, p. 19). People with disabilites should also be accommodated in the work place and in public buildings.

  • No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act

    No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act
    This act pushed for the formation of standards in each grade and annual testing on these standards. This act includes most students with disabilities in the general education testing program. This makes schools accountable for providing an equal education to all students.
