By far one of the most memorable desegregation moments, Rosa Parks was arrested because she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. From here, civil rights activists began to work tirelessly on desegregating city buses. -
Beginning of the Interstate Highway System
Following the signing of the Federal-Aid Highway act, construction for the first Interstate Highway System began. This would allow for faster travel throughout the country and would span about 41,000 miles in total. -
Explorer 1 Launch
Explorer 1 was the satellite from the United State's first successful launch. It was active for 2 years but orbited for 12 and sparked the beginning of the Space Race between America and the Soviet Union following the launch of the Soviet's first two satellites. -
Tiros 1 Launch
This astronomical achievement although only lasting 78 days, was a milestone in the space industry. The Tiros 1 was the first weather satellite launched by the United States and began the rise of satellite use for many other things. Twelve days later, the country's first navigation satellite, Tiros 1-b was launched. -
Kennedy Assassination
In Dallas, Texas, while driving through the streets during a campaign visit, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed by Lee Harvey Oswald. This public assassination of a government leader was shocking to all American's and led to the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson. -
First Moon Landing
By far the biggest achievement in for the development of space technology, Apollo 11 landed on the moon. This was not the first spacecraft to land on the moon, but it was the first one with a crew in it. Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon and NASA was able to get everything televised. -
End of the Vietnam War
Being the first war to ever make an appearance on national television, America's televised defeat led to many anti-war protests. 2 decades after its beginning, the poor and brutal tactical approach taken by the United States and South Vietnam drove people to support the opposition, leading to the victory of the North.
