The first touchscreen smartphone was invented by IBM. It had features such as a cell phone (obviously), a pager, a fax machine, predictive text, camera, maps, and music (if you plugged in an SD card), and apps for email, a calendar, calculator, clock, and a game called Scramble. -
Original iPhone
The first iPhone is released and it is capable of mobile web browsing, music & video playback, visual voicemail, and apps from the Apple App Store. It also has a digital camera but there is no video recording yet. -
iPhone 3G
The iPhone 3G's main improvement from the original iPhone was the Apple App Store being available for users to download apps. The speed of loading pages in Safari also improved a lot. -
iPhone 3GS
The iPhone 3GS had a few improvements from the last iPhone such as a 3-megapixel camera that also supported video recording, more storage, and a faster processor. -
iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 featured improvements to the shape of the phone (it was a lot thinner), it gained a front camera which allowed for users to video chat using FaceTime, the back camera had 5 megapixels, and the phone was a lot faster than the 3GS. Apple made it available in both black and white (compared to just black before) However, many users complained about the phone's antenna and how their phones would constantly drop calls, which led to Apple releasing the 4S shortly after. -
iPhone 4S
The main improvement from the iPhone 4 to the 4S was the introduction of Siri - by voice commands, users could launch apps and Siri also had speech-to-text capabilities. -
iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 featured a bigger screen, improvements to the front camera, it weighs less than previous iPhone models, the phone supported 3G LTE (not just 3G) and it had a much faster processor than the previous model. -
iPhone 5C
The iPhone 5C is a purposefully more affordable iPhone with the same capabilities as the iPhone 5, except it comes in a range of different colors and the FaceTime front camera is a FaceTime HD Camera (compared to just a regular FaceTime camera on the iPhone 5) -
iPhone 5S
The iPhone 5s has an aluminum back and a "Touch ID" fingerprint scanner that allows you to unlock the phone using the fingerprint scanner instead of just having a passcode. The 5S has an improved back camera compared to previous models, and it also has "burst mode" and is capable of recording videos in slow motion (whereas other models of the iPhone are not). The camera flash of the 5S was also improved. This iPhone model also has improved battery life compared to the iPhone 5. -
iPhone 6
The iPhone 6 is thinner than the previous iPhone models and also has undergone a major change in the body of the phone - its edges are curved whereas previous iPhone models had sharp edges. It also has improvements to the screen (which is bigger than other iPhone models) of the phone such as a better resolution and a better polarizer than before. The iPhone 6 has NFC capabilities and a faster processor, improved battery life, and more storage than other iPhone models. -
iPhone 6 Plus
