1st Memory of My mom reading to my brother and me
My first memories of reading literature are not from school; rather, they are sentimental memories of my mom, brother, and me snuggled up with a picture book on the couch in our playroom. The three of us would read together almost every night.

Began to read literature with an analytical approach
In Middle School, my love and appreciation for literature started to grow. Two of my favorite books that stand out in my mind are To Kill a Mockingbird and Jane Eyre. For the first time, I began to read literature through an analytical lens.

My love of English class and reading grows
In High school, my love of English class and reading literature was taken to a new level. My school placed a large emphasis on the English Department and the students’ proficiency in the subject area. My favorite literature in High School was anything Shakespeare, The Great Gatsby, Tale of Two Cities, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Crime and Punishment, Brothers, and my all time favorite, East of Eden.

East of Eden Reading and Writing Assignment
The passionate ending to my senior year involving the writing prompt based on the powerful passage in East of Eden allowed me to see that literature offers the reader an opportunity to reflect on life experiences, personal beliefs, and values.

Deciding to major in Middle Grades Education with an Emphasis in Language Arts and Social Studies
My experiences in Middle and High school in my English classes led me to where I am today. I believe that the most valuable thing that literature has taught me has been to take the opportunity to consider alternate perspectives, ideas, and people different from myself, and I am passionate about sharing this opportunity with my future students.
