    On May 10, 1969 a man by the name of Leland Stanford was given the privilege of using a golden nail and hammer to put the final spike into the railroad. This marked the beginning of coast to coast travel by train in the United States.

  • 1902 Coal Miner Strike

    1902 Coal Miner Strike
    President Roosevelt summoned union leaders and business owners to Washington DC. He ordered 10,000 federal troops in and ordered miners to accept arbitration. The miners returned to work 10 days later.
  • Panama Canal Open for Business

    Panama Canal Open for Business
    This was a very difficult venture. When President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Canal he was the first sitting President to travel outside of the US.
  • Beginning of World War 1

    Beginning of World War 1
    World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his pregnant wife Sophie. Troops from Austria and Hungary entered Serbia in August and the fighting began.

    This period took place between the end of World War 1 and the mid 1930's. It was a time of culture, poetry, literature, music and dance.

    The terms of the agreement called for the cessation of fighting along the entire Western Front to begin at precisely 11 AM that morning.
