    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and WW1
    “The Great War” was officially started after Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Bosnian-Serb nationalist group who hoped to ignite a war against the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Many other countries would join- creating a world wide war.

    The end of World War 1
    The Treaty of Versailles was signed, as it ting an official end to WW1-but all was not settled in Europe. The conditions of the Treaty of Versailles would build tensions in Germany over the years leading up to the second world war.

    The Great Depression

    A time of world wide economic turmoil. It began with the Stock Market Crash of ‘29, and would continue for another decade. During this time, The Dust Bowl was wrecking havoc on crops. People were poor and hungry. This would not change in the U.S. until President Rosevelt (FDR) created social programs called “The New Deal” that would help boost economic growth and develop new farming methods.

    Wall Street Crash of ‘29- Start of Great Depression
    Against the warning of the Federal Reserve, investors would continue to sell stocks carelessly. They believed the Market would continue to rise and never drop after their almost decade of economic prosperity. In October of 1929, the stock market plummeted on what is known as “Black Monday”. This would throw the world into an era of economic depression that would take a decade to recover from. Unemployment rates were at an all time high.

    Pearl Harbor
    A majority of the major players entered World War 2 in 1939, but it wasn’t until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that the U.S. would enter the war. For the Japanese, it was a warning for the United States to stay out of the war, but for America it was an open invitation. That same day, the United States declared war on Japan- and later Germany. This event in the war was the first attack that would take place on American soil.

    D-Day
    Landing in Normandy would prove to be a turning point in the war for the Allied forces that would lead to their victory over the Axis powers. Starting in Normandy, they would lead their forces to liberate North-West European countries from German occupation.
  • Atomic Bombs Dropped

    Atomic Bombs Dropped
    On August 6th and 9th, the U.S. sent atomic bombs to Japan- landing in the cities Nagasaki and Hiroshima on their own respective dates. The purpose of the bombings was to force Japan to surrender and put an end to World War 2. Japan would not officially surrender until September 2, 1945.

    Communism versus Democracy. The Soviet Union and United States could not agree on how European affairs following WW2 would be conducted. The result of this tension was multiple proxy wars aided by U.S. and USSR on opposing sides, the division of Germany, and decade long global animosity.

    Vietnam War Begins
    Deadly war with the greatest loss of American soldiers since the Civil War. It was a major event in the Cold War, America would get involved to aide South Vietnam against Communist North Vietnam from 1968 to March if 1973. Ended with The Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 and North Vietnam victorious. Great loss for America, and there was little support from Americans.

    Richard Nixon Resigns
    Leaked documents of Watergate scandal lead to his resignation from presidency. Impeachment was inevitable, and his loss of public support was an added factor in Nixon electing to leave office
  • Berlin Wall Falls

    Berlin Wall Falls
    This event was a domino in the falling of the Soviet Union. The Berlin wall was a stepping stone in the reunification of Germany.
  • Fall of the USSR

    Fall of the USSR
    Corruption, political dissonance, local rebellion, and a myriad of reasons lead to the downfall of the USSR. All of the soviet republic countries became their own countries, but this lead to more problems due to border disputes and tensions among the fallen states.
