    Perkins Institution for the Blind opens
    The school is the oldest school for the blind in the United States. Provides education to students that are blind and deafblind. The event is important because it provided education for the blind that there wasn't before.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    Council for Exceptional Children
    The council was created by a group of administrators and supervisors. The council advocates for better education for students with disabilities or has gifts and talents. Leads in the development of professional standards and ethical practices.

    The act brought education into legislation light. The act made a commitment to provide quality education to all children. It was important to start the movement toward equal education.
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    The case went in favor of the students. The case was the first "right to education" in the united states to overturn Pennsylvania law. The case set the momentum for the Education for All Handicapped Children Act that was later passed.

    The case was about a group of students that have disabilities that where excluded from the education of a public school in the District of Colombia. The court ruled in favor of the students and said that the school district failed to give them the rights to their education. The court case was important because it laid the ground work for Section 504.

  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    Congress passed the law in 1975. All public schools receiving federal funds where required by law to provide equal education to students with disabilities. This provides equal education to people that may have not been able to access it before.
  • Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    Handicapped Children’s Protection Act
    The act amended the Education of the Handicapped Act. The act added public access to hearing decisions and an informal complaint resolution procedure. This act provided safeguards from retaliation of educational assistance the student needs.
  • IDEA 2004

    IDEA 2004
    The act was a re-authorization of the original IDEA. It includes free and appropriate public education, nondiscriminatory identification and evaluation, IEP, lRE, parent participation, and due process safeguard. The act insure equal education opportunity to students.
