First Encounter (Age 3)
I was in line at target with my mom and I noticed that the person in front of use looked different, this was because they had Down-Syndrome. At the time I had no idea what Down-Syndrome was so I ended up asking my mom why they looked different and see explained to me about what special needs was. -
Pulled Out of Class (Age 6)
I was pulled out of class for the first time. I needed extra help in Language Arts, and was part of a "reading group". I learn helpful tricks such as the "bed trick" to helped me with letter reversal. -
Dance Class (Age 8)
I had a peer in my dance class who had a hearing impairment as well as a vision impairment. -
My Brother (Age 11)
My Brother was given an IEP, and I learned more about IEPs because of it. He was in second grade. -
Meeting An Inspiration (Age 13)
An inspiration of mine is a dancer with special needs that went to the same dance academy as me. Before meeting her I knew who she was because she was such a big part of the dance academy. I had also seen her dance on stage before. She is about 7 years older than me, and I had always looked up to her. -
First Encounter with Autism (Age 16)
I watched a film in my sophomore biology class called "Temple Grandin". It focused on the story of Temple Grandin and how Autism influences her life. -
Teaching a Special Needs Student (Age 18)
During my first year as a Dance Instructor I had a student who had a movement disability. I always kept her in mind when creating lesson for the class. -
My Accommodation (Age 21)
I tested for accommodations at SRJC and still use those accommodations at SSU. -
Learning About Autism (Age 22)
My boyfriend began working with children who have Autism, through a company called ACES. He has shared his knowledge with me which has allowed me to learn more about special education as a whole. -

I am finally taking a class focused on special education at SSU
