  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education
    Was the beginning case that allowed parents of students with disabilities to bring lawsuits against their school districts for excluding and separating their student from others. "Separate is in fact not equal."
  • Elementary and Secondary Act

    Elementary and Secondary Act
    An amendment to this act was originally passed in 1965. This amendment allowed for federal funds to be authorized and disbursed to schools that has a program to educate students with disabilities. Did not make it law to educate students with disabilities
  • The Rehabilitation Act and Section 504

    The Rehabilitation Act and Section 504
    Created the aspect that people with disabilities (physical or mental) could not be denied benefits in any program receiving federal funds. This law also creates the idea of the Least Restrictive Environment and Free Appropriate Public Education.
  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

    Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
    FERPA is a federal law that allows the student's parents to access their children's records Along with that, it keeps the schools from sharing the children's reports without the parent's consent.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    Made clear that all students with disabilities are educated in public schools. Will be replaced by IDEA (foreshadowing)
  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    Handicapped Children's Protection Act
    This law gave parents of children with disabilities more say so in the creation and development of their child's Individual Education Plan.
  • American's with Disabilities Act

    American's with Disabilities Act
    This law writes that those with special needs will have the same rights and opportunities as those without special needs, in school and at work. Also officially put into place that those with special needs cannot be discriminated against in schools, work, and everyday society.
  • Individual with Disabilities Education Act

    Individual with Disabilities Education Act
    When originally enacted, IDEA replaced EHCA as its entitlement of free appropriate public education for children with disabilities. Also pushed the notion that each child's education should be planned and monitored via an IEP. there will be two other re-authorizations of IDEA in 1997 and 2004.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    Stated that all students should be advancing and becoming proficient in math and reading by 2014. For this to be monitored, standardized tests were placed to mark the progress of each student.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act
    This piece of legislation replaced and updated the No Child Left Behind Act. States are given more power over their educational accountability plans.
