Ending of Segregation
U.S. Supreme Court issued a civil rights decision in Brown vs. Board of Education which ended segregation in public schools. This lead to lawsuits against the public schools due to the segregation of children with disabilities. -
Elementary and Secondary Education
The assessment of inequality of educational opportunities for students who were underprivileged took place. This lead to the ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) to be replaced by the Education of the Handicapped Act P.L. 91-230 which aimed to develop education programs for individuals with disabilities in 1970. -
PARC vs. Common Wealth District Court
Students with learning disabilities were allowed to be placed in a setting that meets their individual educational needs. This was sided upon by Pennsylvanian association for Retarded Children (PARC) when going up against Common Wealth District Court of the Eastern District. -
In Need of Special Education
PARC and Mills congress set out to find the number of children that were in need of special education. Eight million children were requiring special education survives in the U.S. and 1.75 million were not in school. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
Congress declared that all students with disabilities will be entitled to education and had access to an education and due process of law. -
EAHCA
President Gerald Ford signed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. This made all schools that received funding form the government to provide equal education to all students regardless if one has a disability. -
The Signing of the Handicapped Children's Protection Act
President Reagan signed the Handicapped Children's Act which gave parents of handicapped children more say in the education of their child. This is known as the Individual Education plan, or IEP. -
ITP
Tramatic brain injury and autism were added to the category of disabilities. Congress made it mandatory that an individual transition plan, or ITP, must take place to help student's so they can transition to a second life. -
IDEA
Education of All Handicapped Children became IDEA. The IDEA allowed children with special needs to have access to the same curriculum. -
Amendment of IDEA
Congress amended the IDEA where early instruction for students would be called and standards were raised for those who are teaching Special Education
