Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965
This act provided funding to schools with percentages of low-income families and families with children that had disabilities. This was the first federal grant program that specifically targeted children with disabilities. -
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973
This act was to extend and revise the the authorization of grants to States for vocational rehabilitation. This allowed for students with disabilities to have accommodations in their education, such as special study areas and assistance for each student. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
This Act stated that public schools had to provide the same opportunities for children with special needs than those who do not. This also instituted federal funding for the education of disabled student, systematic evaluation requirements, and maintained appropriate services for these students. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
This act made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal. This act also states accessibility requirements for public facilities. I conjunction with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, this makes colleges and other post secondary schools offer academic adjustments and accessible housing to students with disabilities. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This Act is a modification of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act that was pass in 1975. This Act ensure that special needs students receive appropriate free public education in the least restrictive environment that will meet the student's needs. -
No Child Left Behind
This Act makes schools accountable for academic growth and performance of all students, regardless of disability. This allows
every state to create unique criteria that is unique to their own circumstances. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
This created what is known as an IEP or Individualized Education Program. This states that caregivers are to meet annually to develop and assess an educational plan. The plan includes current academic status, measurable goals, designation and placement of an instructional setting.
