  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    This supreme court case ruled that racial segregation in public schools would now be considered unconstitutional. This case served as the foundation for the civil rights movement and helped establish other public education laws.
  • Association for Children with Learning Disabilities

    Association for Children with Learning Disabilities
    Now known as Learning Disabilities Association of America, this organization brought free, pubic education to students with learning disabilities. This organization provides information about legislation that affects students, works with schools to provide the appropriate services and programs, and even works with the parents of students who have learning disabilities.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    This act made sure that elementary and secondary schools are funded and that each child has equal opportunity to receive education. This law was passed as part of the "War on Poverty" enacted by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The act is revisited and authorized every five years.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia
    This case ruled that students with disabilities are to receive public education even if they are not able to afford it.
  • The Rehabilitation Act

    The Rehabilitation Act
    The Rehabilitation Act (PL 93-112) prevents discrimination towards individuals with disabilities in federal programs and agencies.
    Section 504 prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities by any program that receive federal financial assistance.
  • IDEA

    IDEA
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ensures that students receive education based on their individualized needs, ensure that they are protected under the law, and ensure that the institution they are at provide the correct services and education. This act was known as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) until 1990 when the name was changed to IDEA (PL 94-142).
  • Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments

    Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments
    PL 99-457 states that children ages 3-5 that have disabilities are entitled to free, public education and that their families are even eligible to receive grants.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    This act prohibits discrimination based on disability. This includes both mental and physical disabilities.This act also requires employers to make accommodations for those employees with disabilities.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act required each state to set assessments for students in each grade level. The standards were set by each individual state rather than having one national standard.
  • Rosa's Law

    Rosa's Law
    This law removes the terms "mental retardation" and replaces it with "individual with an intellectual disability" and "intellectual disability." This law was named after Rosa Marcellino, a 9 year old girl with Down Syndrome.
