Brown v. Board of Education
This event, was not one that affected directly the Special Education Law, but it was the spark that created the movement from parents to demand an equality for their children with disabilities. -
PARC v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
A case fought, for children with disabilities to be able to attend public schools and government give them the appropriate funding for their treatment. -
Mills v. Board of Education
Was a court case, the was brought to court because of seven children who had a certain disability. Their parents were looking for all of them to have the same education in public schools as other children. The parents filed the suit stating that the District of Columbia as denying those students the access to free public education because of their disabilities. This Education of All Handicapped Children's Act (EAHCA) and later to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) -
Education for Handicapped Children
President Gerald Ford, signed the act Public Law 94-142, which explained that all states that received governmental funding had to be shared equally among public school for handicapped children.
Public Law 99-457 gave financial support to parents with handicapped children. -
Education of All Handicapped Children's Act renamed to Americans with Disabilities Act
With this, protection to disabled people was extended to the state and local governments. Also, granted disabled people to not be discriminated if they were looking for a job and neglect free education to any student. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Services to Parentally Placed Private School Students with Disabilities
The main change in this act was to help parents of disabled children if wanting to transfer their child to a private school; the public school would help the private school in the transition of the student. Also, would go through a procedure to ensure the private school has a sort of "service plan" (IEP's) to give the parent and the child the access to their free education. This ensured the involvement of the parent to their child's education. -
No Child Left Behind Act
This is an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This act is to make students progress in their education doesn't matter if they have a disability or not. -
IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)
This act had been amended several times, the last time it was amended was in 2004 in which congress specified, that education for students with disabilities was to be more emphasized in reading, early intervention and research-based instruction. Also demanding more highly qualified teachers in that field.
