  • American School for the Deaf

    American School for the Deaf
    The American School for the Deaf, known to be the first school for disabled children anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, is founded in Hartford, Connecticut
  • Perkins School for the Blind

    Perkins School for the Blind
    Founded in Watertown, Massachusetts, the first school charted for students with visual impairments. Assisted in creating a new system for reading and printing embossed texts for schools across the country. https://www.perkins.org/history
  • Law Mandating Compulsory Education

    Rhode island passed a law mandating children are required to receive education and for governments to provide it.
  • Beattie v. Board of Education

    Special needs students were being expelled for their "nauseating" features (drooling, facial abnormalities). This resulted in a lawsuit led to the Supreme Court.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The first advocacy group for children with disabilities. Their objective is to ensure that children with special needs receive free appropriate public education. https://www.cec.sped.org/
  • Brown v. Board of Education

  • Mills v. Board of Education of D.C.

    Made it unlawful for the D.C. Board of Education to deny students with mental and learning disabilities and behavioral issues access to publicly funded educational opportunities.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This act ensured all students with disabilities are educated in public schools. This included providing free education, special education for children ages 3-21, zero rejection, due process, and less restrictive environments.
  • Least Restrictive Environment

    States that with a student's IEP, they must be in as many general education classes as possible, ensuring the student has social experiences. Paraprofessionals and aids are usually required, but allows the student access to less restrictive social environments.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    This act promises people with special needs will have the same rights as everyone else. Stating people with special needs cannot be discriminated against in schools, workplace, and everyday society (public transportation, markets, etc.)
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    NCLB was signed into law by President George W. Bush. This law states all students should be proficient in math and reading by 2014, hence the name "No Child Left Behind".
