Mills v Board of Education of The District of Columbia
A class action suit that ruled against having students with disabilities excluded from school on the basis of their disability and because the school district could not afford to educate them. The judge ruled that this was a violation of their right to a public education -
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Prohibited discrimination on the basis of disability in programs run by federal agencies;programs receiving federal financial assistance; in federal employment; and in the employment practices of federal contractors. -

The Americans with Disabilities Act
Established greater protections for persons with disabilities to include employment, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications. Enacted by congress in 1990. -
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
Signed into law by George HW Bush. Ensures students with disabilities will have a Free Appropriate Public Education. Giving children with disabilities the right to the same education as their non disabled peers. -
Sacramento City Board of Education v. Rachel Holland
A landmark case that ruled in favor of a developmentally and mentally handicapped girl. The ruling allowed her to be included in the general education classroom with supports listed in her IEP -
The No Child Left Behind Act
An act of congress. Reauthorized ESEA and included title one provisions. An attempt to close the achievement gap in America's public schools. Standards based education reform. Introduced annual testing in reading and math in grades 3-8 and high school. Highly qualified teacher mandate. -
The Every Student Succeeds Act
Signed into law by president Barack Obama. State adopted standards that prepare students for higher education. Statewide annual assessments. Low performing schools must be held accountable by the states and implement programs for improvements. Public access to public spending and pupil test scores. Redefined teacher qualifications as effective. Funding to be focussed on high poverty schools and districts.
