    These two men men were on an expedition - the first one in Texas specifically for Christian evangelization. The mission was on request by the Jumano indians and they promised they would return.

    Rio San Clemente was the first mission in Texas. It was located near preset-day San Angelo along the Concho river. It was the follow-up mission from Alonso de Leon and Father Damian Massanet's expedition.

    La Salle (France) led an exploration through Texas to navigate the Mississippi river. This scared the Spanish thinking the French were going to take Texas, so they started to build missions.

    Father Francisco Hidalgo wanted to create a Spanish mission, but his requests got denied. He then asked the French to visit San Juan Bautista, so they did for trade. The party arrived in July of 1714.

    This mission was founded by Father Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares across the San Antonio River. On the other side of the river was presidio San Antonio de Bexar built by leadership of Martin de Alarcon. San Antonio de Valero is now known as the Alamo.

    Father Anotion Margil de Jesus initiated plans for these missions un 1719. San Jose has been on the San Antonio river, and now it is west side of the river.

    Jose de Escandon explored the colony of Nuevo Santander and created seven colonies there one of them being Nuestra Senora de los Dolores Hacienda. He was then made governor and captain general of Neuvo Santander on June 1, 1748.

    The three San Xavier misisions were built aside the San Gabriel river. They were intended to serve the Tonkawas , but it was raided by the Apache and overcome by diseases. The Tonkawa soon left.
