Indians were restored to nominal freedom. This could have improved the Indians' view of the Spaniards. -

This was the first major settlement in North America, and the start of the era of the missions. -
Mission San Fransisco de la Espada was founded
This was the first mission in Texas, and was established for the Jumano Indians. -
Mission Socorro
This mission was established for the Piros people, it was swept away by a flood in 1744 but was built again in 1843. -
Mission Corpus Christi de la Ysleta del Sur was founded
This Mission was established for the Tigua in El Paso and is still in use as a church. -
Mission Santisimo Nombre de Maria was founded
This mission was esatblished for the Nabedache Indians, but was a fialure because the naitves' response was negative. It was destroyed in 1692 by floods and was abandondened in 1693. -
Mission San Fransisco de los Tejas
Mission San Fransisco de los Tejas was the first mission in East Texas. -
Expedition
The Spanish force moved North intent on setteling land claimed by Spain and bringing the Christian religion to the native peoples they encountered. -
Mission San Bernardo was founded
Mission San Bernardo was founded for the Apache Indians, and failed because it was destroyed by the Comanche Indians. -
Mission Espiritu Santo was founded
Mission Espiritu Santo is considered to be one of the most successful missions in Texas because it converted and baptized many of the Karankawa Indians. This mission is still standing today. -
Mission Nuestra Senora del Rosario was founded
Mission Nuestra Senora del Rosario was established for the Karankawa Indians. It was a failure because it was abandoned in 1781 and only converted 200 Indians. -
MIssion San Saba
Mission San Saba was estalished for the Apache Indians and was a failure because it only converted 2 Indians. -
Mission Nuestra Senora del Refugio
This mission failed when it was abandoned in 1830. -
Mission San Juan Bautista was founded
Mission San Juan Bautista was founded for the Mutsun and Yokut Indians. It was successful because it converted many of the local Indians to Christianity, and was never destroyed.
