De Lome Letter
Señor Don Enrigue Dupuy de Lôme, the Spanish Ambassador wrote to Don José Canelejas, the Foreign Minister of Spain, stating de Lôme’s opinion of Spanish involvement in Cuba and President McKinley’s diplomacy. The letter was intercepted and was published by the New York Journal adding to aggressive foriegn policy. -

An unknown reason to the ship, USS Marine exploded and sank. Many reporters were lead to believe that there was a mine and the Spanish caused it to try and enact war.
