The letter was seized and contained derogatory comments about president MnKinley saying "It shows once more that McKinley is weak and catering to the rabble and, besides, a low polititian who desires to leave a door open to himself and to stand well with the jingos of his party." -

An explosion caused the USS Maine to sink kiling 266 Navy men. The cause of the explosion was never determined, but Americans believed that Spain had something to do with it. -
