William Seward arranged the purchase of Alaska from Russia. It was approved by the U.S. Senate May 27, 1867. President Andrew Johnson signed the final treaty the following day and the transfer was made Oct. 18, 1867 -

Planter's Request to the President
After their revolt, the planters' decided to send a proposal/request to President Benjamin Harrison. It was later sent to Washington and went to senate with Harrison's recommendation. Senate failed to act and the treaty was withdrawn. -
U.S.S. Maine to Cuba
President McKinley sent the U.S.S. Maine to Havana, Cuba to protect the U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain.
Many Americans thought that the explosion of the Maine had to do with Spain although it could have been an internal explosion. -

At 7 p.m. that morning,the Battle of Manila Bay Started. The night before it started Montojo was informed that Dewey's ships had been seen in Subic Bay that morning. At midnight, Dewey was aboard the U.S.S. Olympia and led his fleet to Manila Bay. -

American Troops had to capture San Juan Hill so they attacked the Spanish. Colonel Roosevelt led his "Rough Riders" up San Juan Hill to take it over. -

What was called a "Splendid Little War" was now over. Spain signed a truce and four centuries of glory had ended for Spain. -

President Woodrow Wilson signed the Jones Act of 1917 and Puerto Rico was officialy declared a U.S. territory.
