    Yellow journalism is a story that is exaggerated to make it more exciting. Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst both used this to try and out sell each other. This is a major cause of the Spanish American War.

  • McKinley becomes president

    McKinley becomes the 25th President of the United States..

  • Explosion of the USS Maine

    The Maine explodes at the harbor of Havana and the Spanish is blamed. Now the slogan "Remember the Maine" is used as a cry for revenge.

  • The U.S. declares war on Spain

    After the explosion of the Maine the American people pushed the government to go to war because of the Maine, yellow journalism, American business in Cuba, and we had pity for Cubans.

  • Dewey launches surprise attack at Manila Bay

    Thanks to Theodore Roosevelt Commodore Dewey was at the Phillipines and was able to launch a surprise attack and sink the ships at Manila.

  • Theodore Roosevelt resigns and goes to war.

    Theodore Roosevelt sends John Dewey to the Phillipine Island to prepare for war then he resigns so he can fight as well.

  • Charge up San Juan Hill

    Theodore Roosevelt led the "Rough Riders" up San Juan Hill to attack the Spanish and succeded.

  • American destroy the Spanish ships.

    Off the Southern Cuban Coast the Americans are sucessful in sinking the Spanish Warships so they cannot escape.

  • Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris is signed in France and the U.S. gains Puerto Rico, Guam, and the the Phillipines is bought for 20 million dollars.

  • Theodore Roosevelt wins a Medal of Honor

    President Clinton awards Theodore Roodevelt the highest medal of honor for his bravery in the Spanish American War.
