General Weyler, a Spanish general also known as "The Butcher", was sent to Cuba to put down the rebellion to bring it back to political order and to make the sugar can industry more profitable, and to do so built concentration camps in which he put many, many people. -
De Lome letter is published
A letter written by Señor Don Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, the Spanish Ambassador of the U.S., sent to Done José Canelejas, the Foreign Minister of Spain, and harshly criticized President McKinley. The letter was published by the New York Journal, and angered the American people, giving more fuel to the fire to push the U.S. to get involved in the Cuban Spanish conflict going on. -
Explosion of the U.S.S. Maine
The U.S.S. Maine, a U.S. battleship, entered a Havana harbor and was blown up by a mine, which destroyed the bottom and killed 260 men and officers that were on board at the time. -
President McKinley addresses Congress on Cuba
President McKinley addressed Congress for the authorization to end the conflict between Cuba and the Spanish, giving reason of not wanting conflict so near the U.S., to keep U.S. citizens that were in Cuba safe, and that the things being done there were inhumane. -

A battle in the Philippines between the U.S. Asiatic Squadron and the Spanish Pacific Fleet at Manila Bay. It was the first battle of the Spanish American War, and was a U.S. victory. Around 400 Spanish sailors were killed, and 10 Spanish warships either captured or destroyed, with only 6 Americans being wounded. -

1898 Treaty of Paris
The treaty that ended the Spanish American War, signed by the Spanish and American governments. It gave Cuba independence from the Spanish, and made Spain cede Guam and Puerto Rico to the U.S.
