Vincent Van Gogh's "The Night Cafe"
Vincent Van Gogh used the medium of oil on canvas for this piece of artwork. The period is Post Impressionism and the style is impasto. The strokes, lines and shades that Van Gogh used was purposely chosen to express his feelings. He used color as a symbol because colors are connect to feelings and behaviors in our society. He wanted to tell the story of how this cafe "can ruin oneself" (Fichner-Rathus p. 52) and he did this by chosing colors that clash with each other. -
