The 1920s
The 20s could be said to be a relatively progressive age in some ways, and yet conflict came with it. During this time, the 19th amendment (Women's rights) was ratified, and cities were becoming more and more populated. Consumerism became a lifestyle with the introduction of mass production, and though this could be perceived as prosperous, many disagreed with the changes in U.S. culture. This cartoon is an example of that, specifically to the small freedom women had gained. -

The 1930s
In the 1930s, the stock market crashed, causing what would be known as the great depression. Most people had very, very little money, if any, and jobs were extremely scarce. Though Roosevelt would eventually turn the depression around, much of this decade was spent in poverty. This is not reflected in the ad, though the price, around three dollars, could be a sign. -
The 1940s
World War II went on for most of the 40s, and featured one of the first peacetime drafts in America. Most of America's men were out of the country in Europe fighting, and it was left to the women of America to take up their jobs and keep the country ticking. This advertisement reflects this, as it's practically saying "HEY! GET GOING!" -
The 1950s
Like the 20s, this decade had a layer of prosperity that masked conflict. The war was over, and America was said to "Stand at the summit of the world." It was a rising power in both financial means and military means, and also had an quickly increasing population. However, the push for civil rights, as well as the cold war, began in the fifties. This ad reflects the rather upbeat (though sexist) mood at the time. -
The 1960s
A great number of events happened during this time. The Vietnam War, the assassination of both President Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., and the civil rights movement still pushed forward. The civil rights act was passed during this decade, as well as the equal pay act. This advertisement does not quite show any of the conflict and turmoil going on during this time...perhaps it is simply an ad. -
The 1970s
The 70s saw the presidency of Nixon. Politics in general grew more and more complicated. Paranoia and aggression were spreading through the government, and public distrust of the government was rising. After the Watergate Scandal, and the pardoning of Nixon shortly thereafter, many retreated from the government. The decade became a haze as people tried to distract themselves from the world around them, drugs were a large part of that distraction. This ad is for one of those drugs. -
The 1980s
This was the decade of the cold war, and saw the presidency of Ronald Reagan. The country went through many economic changes, some good, some bad, as well as social changes. Most of the social and cultural changes were focused around the rising importance of television, music, and art. I'm not quite sure how this ad fits into any of that. -
The 1990s
The 1990's had a couple large events that are still shaping our country today.. The other large part of this decade was the implementation of the internet. Computers revolutionized the media as a whole, and this ad is showing off that computer. -
2000
The 2000s was a decade of conflict. The 2001 bombings of the world spurred the U.S. into its controversial war on terror. Environmental awareness rose, but America faced a good number of problems, including an energy crisis and an economic crisis. The internet spread rapidly, growing in importance as information became more widespread and accessible. Frankly...I'm not sure how any of this connects to the advertisement. -
2002
2002 was the year of violence and shootings in the United States and around the world. Countries have joined forces to battle against Afghanistan after 9/11 occurred. Many arrests have been made in the United States through the ring despite the event in New York. Discrimination of Muslims have began in this era. -
2004
Google released Gmail in this era, where emails can be sent instantly with a username and password. This could lead to people chatting and it gives them the right to say whatever they want. Spacecraft is also a huge part in 2004 with NASA as well as astrology. Bombings still remain here. -
2006
2006 declared to be "International Year of Deserts and Desertification".
NASA launches the first space mission to the planet Pluto. They head to Mars as well as Pioneer 10 goes off. Car bombs and mudslides occurred in this era. -
2008
President Obama became the first, African-American President of the United States in this year. There was a lot of controversy about that since he was a Democrat and Republicans had issues with that, also with racist people who did not want an African-American president. Wars were still going on in Afghanistan, and it was up to the POTUS to solve the world's social issues. -
2010
This was the year when the devastating earthquake in Haiti. There was a lot of destruction to schools and buildings, and not to mention the people. North Korea started to be in a bad status when they had they're torpedo, wanting to nuke the United States. Terrorism in the Middle East still hasn't prospered. -
2012
This was President Obama's second election that he won, and became the POTUS for the second time, and it still made Republicans angry. Katy Perry is a supporter of President Obama, and I'm assuming that she's a democrat.
Everyone thought that the end of the world was going to happen on December 21st, 2012, but nothing happened. -
2014
Everyone was freaking out about Ebola, even though it's only spread by body fluids. The Ebola outbreak began in Africa, and then began to spread in the United States when doctors went abroad to heal the sick over in Africa.
This was the year ISIS was discovered and attacks in Syria became out of control. Discrimination became worse and worse after 9/11. This could be about insurance to live with all the terrorism happening.
