Invention of the Cotton Gin
Who was involved? The North and South of the United States, and England.
What happened? It was an invention created by Eli Whitney in 1793. It was a quicker alternative to picking seed out of cotton.
Where and When did it happen? United States.
Why was important? It made cotton production a profitable Business which lead to the increase in slavery -

What hapened? They wanted to Establish a federal government for the United States of America, and Delegate to the federal government certain powers. Where and when did it happen? United States

What happened? President Thomas Jefferson prohibited American ships from trading in all foreign ports.
Where and When did it happen? United States borders.
Why was important? Increased labor in manufacturing industries, lessening America's reliance on England. -
The Missouri Compromise
Who was involved? James T, and Henry Clay
What happened? Missouri was made into a slave state, maine became a free state, no slavery above the coordinate line.
Where and when did it happen? Congress, and 1819
Why was it important? To keep to decide about state rights by giving the north a free state and making missouri into a slave state. -
Tariff of Abominations
Who was involved? Northern Industries in the United States
What happened? Designed to protect industry in the northern United States.
Where and when did it happen? May 19, 1828 in the Northen United States.
Why was it important? South viewed it as further hindering their economy and created more friction which helped fuel later events such as the Civil War. -
Nullification Crisis

What happened? South Carolina Carolina passed the Ordinance of Nullification Act which declared the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 unconstitutional

Nat Turners Rebellion

California Gold Rush
Who was involved? James Marshall
What happened? James discovered a gold nugget in the American River while constructing a sawmill, News of Marshall’s discovery brought thousands of immigrants to California

Compromise of 1850
Who was Involved? William H. Seward . John C. Calhoun and other Southerners, particularly Jefferson Davis
What happened? A package of five separate bills passed that defused a four-year confrontation between the slave/free states of the South and North regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican-American War.
Where and when did it happen? Missouri and January 29th, 1850
Why was it important? Defused the slave and free states. -
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Who was involved? Harriet Beecher Stowe
What happened? It was an anti-slavery novel that helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War.

Why was it important? Exerted an influence "equaled by few other novels in history." -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
Who was involved? Stephen A. Douglas
What happened? Allowed for new territories to decide if they were a free or slave state by popular sovereignty.
Where and when did it happen? May 30th, 1854 and Kansas/Nebraska
Why was it important? It pretty much ended the Missouri Compromise and set the stage for the Civil War. -
Bleeding Kansas
Who was involved? John Brown, James Buchanan, Stephen Douglas, John Frémont
What happened? When the U.S. was debating whether or not to abolish slavery,government decided to leave the decision of whether or not slavery would be legal or not up to the residents of Kansas themselves

Why was it important? this crisis really pushed the North and South apart -
Dred Scott Case
Who was involved? Dred Scott, John Emerson, Peter Blow.
What happened? A slave sought his freedom under the Missouri Compromise.
Where and when did it happen? Illions, and in March of 1857
Why was it important? enraged abolitionists and encouraged slave owners, helping to push the country towards civil war. -
Lincoln and Douglas debate
Who was involved? Lincoln and Douglas
What happened? Lincoln and Douglas were trying for their respective parties to win control of the Illinois legislature.
Where and when did it happen? Illinois, 1858
Why was it important? largely concerning the issue of slavery extension into the territories. -
John Browns Raid

What hapened? His plan was to instigate a major slave rebellion in the South. He would seize the arms and ammunition in the federal arsenal, arm slaves in the area and move south along the Appalachian Mountains, attracting slaves to his cause.

Why was it important? Succeeded to deepen the divide between the North and South. -

Election of 1860
Who was involved? Democrats and Republican
What happened? The Democrats met in Charleston, South Carolina, in April 1860 to select their candidate for President in the upcoming election, The Republicans met in Chicago that May and recognized that the Democrat's turmoil actually gave them a chance to take the election
