There was a referendum held which showed that the people wanted scotland to have their own parialment and make deicions on certain issues. This was the first monumental step toward Scottish independence in the modern era. -

In 2011 the SNP won a majority of seats in the election for Scottish governments. Because of this the SNP had the ability to force through a referendum in Scotland for independence. -
