Hitler is appointed Chancellor of a nation with a Jewish population of 566,000. He leads the National Socialist Party, otherwise known as the Nazis. This group practices anti-Semitism, or the hatred of Jews. Hitler convinced people that the Jewish population was to blame for the nation’s problems and that the country would thrive better without them. -
Nazis open death camps
Nazis open Dachau concentration camp near Munich, to be followed by Buchenwald near Weimar in central Germany, Sachsenhausen near Berlin in northern Germany, and Ravensbrück for women. Concentration camps were used to rid of the Jewish population by putting them in camps where the strong would work and the weak would be killed. -
Hitler is given dictorial powers
German Parliament passes Enabling Act giving Hitler dictatorial powers. Adolf Hitler now has complete control of the country and has brainwashed everyone into thinking that Jews are less than human. In the book, the men beat the Jewish mistresses probably for this reason, as well as the fact that women were inferior. -
Nazis issue a decree defining a non-Aryan
Nazis issue a Decree defining a non-Aryan as "anyone descended from non-Aryan, especially Jewish, parents or grandparents. One parent or grandparent classifies the descendant as non-Aryan...especially if one parent or grandparent was of the Jewish faith.” Hitler believed that the Aryan race was superior and felt as though non-Aryans were not worthy. -
Nazi is the only party
Nazi Party is declared the only legal party in Germany. The Nazis pass laws to strip Jewish immigrants from Poland of their German citizenship. They do not believe that they are people and therefore should not be considered citizens of a country. -
Forced Sterilization
Nazis pass law allowing for forced sterilization of those found by a Hereditary Health Court to have genetic defects. This included Jewish people or people with Jewish ancesetors, as well as those who may be ill with Down Syndrome or other birth defects that make them less important than the Aryan race. -
More people added to camps
Nazis pass a Law against Habitual and Dangerous Criminals, which allows beggars, the homeless, alcoholics and the unemployed to be sent to concentration camps. Adolf Hitler is trying to completely wipe out any people that do not fit his ideal description, even if they are not Jewish, gypsies, or Homosexual. -
Schindler employs Jews
Oskar Schindler takes over the enamelware factory Kracow. He meets Itzhak Stem, and with his help he begins to employ Jewish workers into his factory. This is a big deal because most people will not employ Jews due to the accusations made by Adolf Hitler. -
Jews are removed from factories
Schindler’s factory with Jewish employees is closed down and all the Jews are taken back to Plaszow. The Jews are not given the same rights as everyone else in the country and they will not be allowed to work for wages. They are forced to work or die in concentration camps. -
Schindler dies
Oskar Schindler dies on this date in Frankfurt, Germany. Schindler is the main character in the novel that is based off real events. In his lifetime, he freed many Jewish people from concentration camps. He was a well-known and respected industrialist, even though he did have fidelity issues and cheated often.
