Decembrist Revolt
-In St. Petersburg Russia, a group of military officials staged a revolt against Tsar Nicholas I.
-They were liberals who felt threatened by the new rulers conservative views.
-The liberals defeated teh rulers forces and Tsar Nicholals I put in place a variety of new regulations to prevent the spreae of liberal movements in Russia. -

Emancipation of Serfs
-Serfs are the Russian peasants.
-Alexander proposed 17 legislative acts that freed the serfs of Russia.
- Before Alexander proposed the legislative acts serfs were treated horribly.
-They were treated inhumanly often raped and tortured daily. -
Revolution of 1905
-Bloody Sunday was the spark of hte revolution.
-Father Gapon started the revolution whenhe took 150,000 people to the cold snowy streets of St. Petersburg to protest about their lives. -
Bloody Sunday
-Russian workers worked on average 11 hours a day in hard and unsafe condtions.
-Workers tried to form trade unions but they were resistred by the factory owners.
-A priest, Father George Gapon formed the Assembly of Russian Workers.
-Over 150,000 people signed a petition and on January 22, 1905 Gapon led a procession of workers to the Winter Palace to present the petition to Nicholas II.
-This incident became known as Bloody Sunday. -
Russia enters WWII
-Germnay decleard war on Russia on August 1, 1914.
- Two days later Russia announced that they were going to war with Germany.
-On August 3, 1914, Russia thought Germany was their last threat to their land. -
Rasputin Murdered
-Raspution was murdered early December 30, 1916.
-Russian nobles wanted to end his sway over the royal family.
-The nobles attempted to poison him but thty didnt wrok.
-He was then shot and felll but he got up and tried to escape.
-He was shot again and he still didnt die.
-He was then shoved into a sack and beaten for 10 minutes and then thrown into the frozen river.
-He was found a few months later and an autopsty was done and hte reason he died was becasue he had water in his lungs. -
March Revolution
-People and soldiers lost faith in Nicholas II and wanted the Duma to take control of the government.
-WWI had a disastrous impact on the Russian economy.
-On February 11, 1917 a large crowd of people were on strike demanding food, breaking shop windows and shouting war slogans. -
Tsar Nicholas II abdicates
-The Russian army high command said that Sir NIcholas II should abdicate.
-On March 15, 1917 he gave up the throne.
-The Tsar and his immediate family were arrested and negotiations began to find a place of overseal exile. -
Bolshevik Revolution
-Also called the October Revolution.
-The Bolshevik soldiers, sailors, and red guards caced into the Winter Palace and started arresting members of the Provsionai Government.
-This act is also called the bloodless coup.
-This movement put the Bolsheiks into power. -
Murder of the Romanovs
-Tsar NIcholas II and his wife and their 5 children were murdered.
-They were captured and killed by members of the Bolshevik party.
-Some say Anna Anderson is Anastasia since her body wasn't found with the rest of the families. -
Treat of Versailles
-It was the peace settlement to end WWI.
-The treaty was signed at the vast Versailles Palace near Paris.
-Hundreds of people were involved in the process and the finalizing of the document. -
Lenin Dies
-He was the first leader of the Soviet Union.
-He died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 54.
-He was also the architect of the Bolshevik Revolution. -
Stalin Takes Power
-Stalin continued Lenins new economic policy.
-He advocated the idea of the setting up of Collective farms.
-Leon Trotsky was Stalins main rival and he wanted to keep him from gaining power. -
Death of Trotsky
-He died early in the morning.
-He was attacked in his home in a suburb of Mexico City.
-Franck Johnson made the attack.
-He was a French Jew.
