    Russia's settlement was located near the steppes. Due to this location, the Russians were vulnerable to the invading tribes. The Ostrogoths, Avars, and Huns were some of these tribes.

    Mongol warriors from central Asia invaded Kievan Rus. In the twelve hundreds the warriors conquered Kievan Rus. While the Kievs were under Mongol rule, they had little to no power.

    During the 1480s, Ivan the Great refused the Mongol rule. He declared Keivan Rus's independance. Ivan the Great recieved his name because of this act.

    The czars, or emperors, of Russia expanded much of Russia. Trade, a new capital and contact with Europe also increased as well because of trade. Catherine the Great and Peter the Great are two czars that made the expansion of Russia possible.

    Peter the Great not only expanded Russia, but also started the building of the new capital, St. Petersburg. The new capital was located close to the Baltic Sea. Peter the Great called St. Petersburg his window on the west.

    Vladmier was a ruler in Kievan Rus who believed in pagan gods. He became curious about other religions and sent out groups of people to find a true religion.These groups saw many religions and were not impressed. They then met with people who worshiped Christ in an Eastern Orthodox fashion and were amazed. When Vladmir heard of this he destroyed all pagan statues and had himself and all of Kievan Rus baptized.
