    Ethernet
    Developed by Robert Metcalfe while working at Xerox PARC in the early 1970s, the Ethernet networking technology was released to the public. It competed with other networking technologies like Token Ring and gradually became the standard for wired networking for Local Area Networks (LAN). The standard is constantly being updates as bandwidth and requirements continue to grow.

  • IBM PC

    IBM PC
    Technology company IBM entered the personal computer market with its introduction of the IBM 5150 PC. It was created by a team of engineers and designers at the company. It launched with an Intel processor and came with a custom version of Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system called PC-DOS. Built with off the shelf components and using the same OS and processor, similar computers were created by other companies called 'IBM compatibles' and set the standard of what we know as PCs today.
  • Commodore 64

    Commodore 64
    Computer company Commodore International releases the home computer the Commodore 64. It sold for less then $600 and came with 64k of RAM with impressive graphics and sounds for the time. It sold from 1982-1993 and went to sell over 22 million units during that time. It still holds the record for the best selling single computer of all time and help expose the the public to personal computing.
  • The Compact Disc

    The Compact Disc
    In a joint effort between companies Phillips and Sony, they created and released the compact disc (CD). It was first used as a new media to to play music that had better sound quality over cassette. It then became usable in computers as another way to store data instead of floppy disc and had more storage capacity. It eventually superseded the floppy disk as storage capacities increased.

    Windows 1.0
    Software company Microsoft released the 1st version of Windows. It was originally an operating environment, providing a graphical user interface, that ran on top of the MS-DOS. It was not successful at first but later releases and becoming a standalone operating system became more popular to become the most used operating system worldwide.
