John Brown's Raid (1859)
John(abolitionist) led followers and African-Americans to raid a arsenal. After 2 days, they were stopped by soldiers and John was charged of murder and treason and sentenced to death. However, he was looked as a hero and martyr to the Northerners, but the white southerners thought John was insane! -
Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)
Divided Nebraska into 2 territories, Kansas and Nebraska. People in each territory would decide slavery by popular sovereignty. Southerners agreed with act, but Northerners did not. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was an enslaved African-American looking for freedom. With his master, he moved from Missouri to Illinois then Wisconsin. His master died in Wisconsin and since that territory was a free state, he believed he should be freed. Court said Dred didn't have right to file a lawsuit (b/c enslaved) and said many racist things. But called Missouri Compromise unconstitutional. Northerners angry, Southerners happy. -
