  • The Stamp Act

    What happened?
    British Parliament enforced the first direct tax on the Americans. The goal was to collect taxes from the printed goods/materials of the colony to pay off war dept.

  • The Quartering Act

    What happened?
    The Quartering Act of 1765 required the colonies to house British soldiers in colonists homes. If they were too small to house all the soldiers, then localities were to accommodate the soldiers in places like local inns.

    *invasion of privacy
    *everyone already strongly disliked the British soldier
    *violated their rights
  • The Boston Massacre

    What happened?
    Nine British soldiers killed 5 men and wounded 6 in a very controversial attack in Boston, Massachusetts.

    * tension between British soldiers and colonist
    * the used this to gain sympathy from other colonist to join the revolution
    * a series of pamphlets are made to depict certain images to the colonist, showing the 'cruelty' of the GB soldiers
  • The Tea Act

    What happened?
    The passing of the Tea Act imposed no new taxes on the American colonies. The tax on tea had existed since the passing of the 1767 Townshend Revenue Act, but this act enforced it. Along with tea, the Townshend Revenue Act also taxed glass, lead, oil, paint, and paper.

  • The Intolerable (Coercive) Acts

    What happened?

  • First Continental Congress

    What happened?
    This was the response to the Intolerable Acts by the American colonist. Delegates from 12 colonies gathered in Philadelphia to discuss how to react to the Intolerable Acts..

    *banned export of American goods to Britain
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    What happened?
    Several hundred British soldiers were sent to seize the colonists' military weapons from Concord. Local militiamen from Lexington intercepted the British troops. British were defeated by the colonist.

    *colonist proved they could stand up to the British troops

  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    What happened?
    2,200 British Troops are marched to Breed's Hill. Americans were soon outnumbered and forced to retreat. However, by the end of the engagement, the Patriots’ gunfire had cut down some 1,000 enemy troops, with more than 200 killed and more than 800 wounded.

  • The Olive Branch Petition

    What happened?
    At the 2nd continental congress, John Dickinson drafted this petition to send to the king. It asked the king to do bargain with him. Such as, if the king does this, the colonists will do this.

    *king doesn't take this petition seriously
    *colonist become angry and are realizing the king doesn't care about their rights
  • The Declaration of Independence

    What happened?
    This document formally proclaimed the 13 colonies as independent but the war continued because Britain was not willing to give up its North American colonies.
    Effects?
    *it allowed the revolutionary war to be seen as a war between two countries instead of a civil war
    *it declared independence from Britain
