    While Hitler and Joseph Stalin were invading Poland Germans used fierce fighting. That fighting was called "Blitzkrieg" or lightning war. It was made up of German surprise attack and rapid invasions.

On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked and president Roosevelt called this day "a day that will live in infamy."     After losing the Battle Of Great Britain, Germany turned and attacked the Soviet Union. Stalin Started the "Scorched Earth Policy"-burn everything that could be helpful to the Germans. Battle of Stalingrad considered the turning point in the war. 100,000 Germans died;80,000 captured when the German wait until winter to attack.

    Churchill, FDR, and Eisenhower planned a land invasion of France. On June 6, 1944 during the night the allies went in on parachutes and gliders behind enemy lines before the invasion. The Resistance also blew up bridges and railroads to slow down the German reinforcements on D-day. They also spied on German troop movement, information that was crucial to the D-day invasion.

    The Battle of the Bulge was Hitler's last attempt to defeat the Allies in Europe. 600,000 Americans fought in the battle;80,000 killed. Germans lost 100,000. Germans lost because they ran out of fuel.

    The Battle of Iwo Jima took place in February 1945.Despite its size, Iwo Jima was considered to have great tactical importance. There were two airfields on the island. They were under Japan's control; they could be used by Japanese fighter planes to attack American bombers on their flights to Japan.
