Peter assumes personal rule
Peter built a new military that would serve the tsar. He drafted approximately 130,000 soldiers during the first decade and almost 300,000 troops by the end of his reign. The Great Northern War
This war was fought between Russia and Sweden. "This war accounted for many of Peter's major steps toward Westernizing his realm. This war came to a close in 1721 when Russia was defeated at Narva by Charles XII." (Craig 614) -
Saint Petersburg Founded
"Peter built government structures and compelled the boyars to construct town houses. The finding of St. Petersburg symbolized a new Western orientation of Russia and Peter's determination to hold his position on the Baltic coast." (Craig 614) -
Death of Aleksei, son of Peter the Great
Peter became jealous of his son, who had never shown strong intelligence or ambition. "Peter became convinced that his court opponents looked to Aleksei as a focus for sedition while Russia was still at war with Sweden. Peter personally interoogated Aleksei, and he was later condemned to death and died under mysterious circumstances." Peter establishes control over the Russian church
Peter first got rid of the position of patriarch, which was the bishop who had been head of the chruch. Instead he established a government deapartment called the Holy Synod, and that consisted of several bishops headed by the procurator general. this body would rule the church under the tsar's requirements (Craig 615) -
Table of Ranks
The Table of Ranks was intended to draw nobility into state service. When Peter died in 1725 it was very unclear of who would succeed him on the throne.
