    Discovery of Rio de Janerio

    Portugal landed on Guanabara Bay and claimed the area. The Portuguese explorers believed that they had landed in a large river mouth. For this reason, the newly discovered city became known as the "Rio de Janeiro" or which can be translated to the "River of January".
