Jackie Robinson's First GameJackie Robinson (28) signed with New York's Brooklyn Dodgers and played his first game at first base. Throughout the game, he was verbally abused and taunted for his race from, not only the fans, but the opposing team; the rude remarks did not put him down in any way, however, and he remained strong and focused during the entire game. -

Rosa Parks Refuses to Give Up Seat
The Story Behind the BusIn Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks boarded an almost full bus and refusesd to give up her seat for a white passenger. Although a nonviolent act, she was quickly arrested. This brave act led to the Montgemory Bus Boycott, which lasted a total of 381 days, and eventually put an end to segregation on Montgomery buses. -
U.S. Attempts to Launch Satellite in Space
Vanguard ProjectAs the Soviet Union moved forward with space technology at an alarming pace (only months before, they launched Sputnik), the U.S. attempted to launch a satellite into space with the Vanguard Project; however, it failed and exploded on the launch pad after lifting only four feet off the ground. -

The last twenty-seven prisoners departed as the San Francisco press watched each guard tower close. Today, Alcatraz is a National Historic Landmark. -

Robert Kennedy's AssassinationRobert F. Kennedy was fatally shot three times in Los Angeles, California. After giving a speech at the Ambassador Hotel, Sirhan Sirhan shot him with a .22 pistol. At Good Samaritan Hospital, he underwent brain surgery, but unfortunately passed away a 1:44 A.M. Sirhan Sirhan was sentenced to death on April 23rd, 1969. -

New York City BlackoutAn electricity blackout occured in almost all of New York City, starting at 8:37 P.M. Two circuit breakers were tripped in Buchanan, New York due to a lightning strike. Soon after, more lightning strikes occured, causing the blackout to increase in size. During the blackout, numerous fires started and destroyed buildings and neighborhoods, in addition to the thieves running on the streets. -

It marks his birthday (January 15th), and is observed on the third Monday in January. Senator Edward Brooke originally introduced the bill, and Ronald Reagan signed it in 1983. -
