Parliament votes to repeal the Stamp Act due to the request from British merchants and the protests from the colonists. -
Townshend Acts
Britain decided to try an external tax that only applied to imported goods and was paid at the port of entry. The tax would apply to items like glass, paper, and tea. -
Boston Massacre
As citizens of Boston protest taxes, the events turn violent when the crowd armed with sticks, stones, and clubs are confronted by British soldiers. After a soldier is knocked to the ground, the British fire into the crowd killing five protesters. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act gave the British East India Company a monopoly over tea trade in America. The company could deal directly with shopkeepers in America. -
Boston Tea Party
A group of colonists dressed up as Mohawks boarded a ship in the Boston Harbor and threw 342 chests of tea overboard to protest the tax on tea. -
Coercive Acts
A series of acts passed by the British to punish the people of Boston for the Boston Tea Party. The acts included closing the port of Boston until the teas was paid for and the quartering of British troops in homes of the colonists. Were known as the Intolerable Acts by the colonists. -
First Continental Congress
Delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to discuss the Intolerable Acts. Wrote a petition to the king for redress of their grievances.
